With a growing demand for digital skills in today’s workforce, Coding in Color has created an exciting initiative to continue to bridge the skills gap by co-hosting a coding event in partnership with Phoenix College for high school students with local businesses in mind.

Hosting a hackathon is not just about coding; it’s a commitment to cultivating innovation, igniting passion, and engaging the brilliant minds of high school students. It’s a collaborative journey where creativity knows no limits, and the spirit of exploration becomes a compass guiding the next generation of leaders towards a future shaped by their own ingenuity.   – Kimberly Britt, Ph.D., Phoenix College President.

This December 8th – December 9th, Coding in Color and Phoenix College’s IT Institute will host a hackathon at the Phoenix College IT Campus where high school students will build an iOS application for a local business, Taylor Candle & Co. The event is particularly exciting as students are eager to put their skills to use in the real world and small businesses are looking to develop their technology without the cost of experienced developers. This hackathon supports building the regional economy through small business digital transformation and developing tech talent.

I’m thrilled to partner with Coding in Color for their upcoming Hackathon event. The iOS app under development will serve as a comprehensive resource hub for candle makers. By engaging young students in real-world projects, we are contributing to the development of the next generation of tech leaders. This collaboration not only benefits my business, Taylor Candle & Co, but also empowers students with hands-on experience, preparing them for a successful career in technology.Taylor Deberry, Owner of Taylor Candle & Co

Over the years, Coding in Color has inspired and sparked curiosity in computing across Phoenix, Arizona where some students who have participated in previous hackathons have progressed to become Coding in Color interns and instructors. The skills acquired during these events have not only encouraged their continued pursuit of computer science but have empowered them to contribute as valuable members of our team.

“As an advocate for digital literacy and community engagement, I am immensely proud to support Coding in Color’s initiative in collaboration with Phoenix College. Their dedication to empowering high school students through real-world coding experiences is both inspiring and essential. By bridging the gap between education and practical application, this program not only nurtures the tech skills of tomorrow’s leaders but also contributes significantly to the vitality of local businesses. This innovative approach in creating symbiotic relationships between students and businesses is a shining example of how we can collectively foster a more technologically adept and interconnected community.” – Devin Del Palacio, Former Arizona State Representative
