Where is the event located?

Hackathons take place at the Maricopa IT Institute at Phoenix College. This concentrated community college offers a variety of computer science classes and certifications.
640 1st Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85003

 

What will students learn at this event?

Students will be taught the very basics of computer programming by building a project. At the end of the event, students will have a functioning project (depending on the theme, they can build a game or an app!) Students will also be provided workshops on various careers in computing (Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, AI, Data Science, and more)

Why is attending an event like this valuable?

How much does the event cost?

It is free!

Do students need to bring anything to the event?

No, students do not need to bring anything to the event except themselves, we will provide computers, food, and drinks!

Will there be plenty of adults and security at this event?

Yes! Phoenix College staff and the Coding in Color staff will be there overseeing all students and activities. Security is at the main entrance, the only way to get into the building.

Can I volunteer at this event?

Yes! Parents or guardians can feel free to volunteer whenever we have an event. Subscribe to our newsletter for the next volunteering opportunity!

Why is the event held overnight and will students have the chance to sleep?

Hackathons typically run for a full 24-48 hours, in that time college students build some piece of software together. At these events, students work on their ideas and then sleep for short periods. Since this Hackathon will be for high school students, we shortened the length of the event to 12 hours. Students are not required to stay up all night, all of the mentors and teachers will be alert throughout the entire event.

What kinds of activities will take place?

Multiple workshops called ‘side quests’ (additional challenges to solve) are held throughout the event while students work on their main project as well. At the end of the event, prizes are given out to the winners of the best app/software ideas!

Are parents required to chaperone since the event is overnight?

Parents are not required to attend but can fill out the volunteer form when an event takes place. The Hackathon is similar to a student government-style lock-in where students remain in a single area with mentors and teachers overseeing them and the activities.

Porque se hace el evento en la noche? Tendran tiempo para dormir los estudiantes?

Tipicamente, los Hackathons pueden durar de 24 a 48 horas. En ese tiempo, los estudiantes construyen algun Proyecto de computacion juntos. En estos eventos, los estudiantes pueden dormir por cortos periodos para poder terminar con su proyecto a tiempo. Como el Hackathon es para estudiantes de preparatoria, quisimos cortar el tiempo un poco pero darles una experiencia de nivel de colegio Universitario.

Que tipo de actividades habra?

Aparte de el proyecto grande, habran actividades cortas relacionadas en las que los estudiantes podran aprender mas sobre su proyecto y hacer puntos extras! Las actividades seran problemas que tienen que resolver los estudiantes.

Es requerido que los padres se queden con los hijos?

La respuesta corta, es no. No es requerido que los padres atiendan pero pueden ser voluntaries si estan interesados. Todos estaremos en un solo salon grande donde todos los estudiantes estaran a la vista. Si algun padre esta interesado en ser voluntario, es possible que puedan ayudar. Por favor dejenos saber si esta interesado en ser voluntario para poder acomodarnos efectivamente.
