Over the month of November, Coding in Color conducted a series of workshops at Phoenix College, specifically targeting their ACE Program. The workshops were broken down into a three-part series where students built their own personal websites. Each workshop was an hour and a half long with a focus on kinesthetic learning and allowing students to build along with the instructor. The workshops were taught by board members of Coding in Color along with two of our Summer Coding Camp students.

The first workshop consisted of introducing students to sublime text, our text editor,  HTML and CSS. Students were able to build an ‘About Me’ page and included some customization such as adding a photo, changing font sizes and changing the background color. The second workshop consisted of teaching students the basics of the internet and the different methods of data transfer. Students built a ‘Resume’ page where we encouraged students to think about their professional growth. Students also made a GitHub account to store their code. The third workshop was focused on the finishing touches by adding a menu to link their ‘About Me’ and ‘Resume’ page along with their external styling page. By the end of the series, students were able to create a two-page, personal website and launch their websites using GitHub pages.

We would like to give a special thank you to Phoenix College and the ACE program for coordinating and providing a lab for our students!

We look forward to creating more workshops for the Spring 2019 semester!
